Education for Ministry

By our baptismal vows, we all have a call to ministry. This doesn’t mean that we are called to be priests or deacons, though some may. EFM is a four -year course which you commit to one year at a time.

The first year the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) is the focus. It involves the most reading, but you don’t have to read everything. Second year is focused on the New Testament while the third year involves the history of Christianity. The final year is a deeper study of different theological thoughts and developing your own personal theology. I am really excited about three books that will be read this year.

The second -year students get a new book this year, The Misunderstood Jew by Amy Jill-Levine. The two common books that everyone reads are The Four Vision Quests of Jesus by Steven Charleston and an oldie but goody Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurmond.  So, if you have already completed all four years but it has been a while, I would recommend you registering for year two.

The cost is $350 but All Saints offers a scholarship of $200. Then you buy or rent the books. Please contact me for more information. There will be an organization meeting at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 25th.  We plan to start the class the first week of September.  At present, there will be two classes, one at Holy Nativity on Sunday afternoons and an evening class at All Saints.
