MINISTRY MEMOS:
Fall/Winter Services: Beginning this Sunday, September 8th, we will return to holding both our 8:00 AM & 10:00 AM Eucharist services.
Social Justice Committee September & October Ministry: In partnership with Whitney United Methodist Church, the Social Justice Committee has placed a box in the narthex to collect clean and gently used coats for Joseph’s Closet which distributes clothing to folks in need. They welcome coats from all seasons from infant to adult, but especially need men’s coats in larger sizes.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS:
Free Community Meal: Our next monthly meal will be on Friday, September 6th, at 5:00 P.M. To volunteer, please check out our sign-up: https://allsaintsboise.org/worship-and-community/sign-ups/. All are welcome to join in the supper – we’re having taco salad and gazpacho this month!
Coffee & Conversation: September 7th at 11:00 AM we’ll be meeting at Alchemist, 2701 W. Stewart Ave., to catch up on all the summer fun we had and plan fall activities!
BOISE BENCH & BEYOND:
Welcoming Prayer: “The Welcoming Prayer is a powerful path for connecting the inner consent of Centering Prayer with the outer requirement of unconditional presence in daily life.” —The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault, Episcopal Priest. Welcoming Prayer Workshop, All Saints Episcopal Church, September 7th, 9:30-12:30. Register contact: [email protected].
Party at the Pen: Can you think of a better place to showcase vintage motorcycles than a former state penitentiary? Classic choppers will convene at the Old Idaho Penitentiary, which housed inmates for 101 years (from 1872 to 1973). The best 1960s and ‘70s style motorcycles will be displayed throughout the grounds and inside prison cell blocks. All proceeds benefit Wounded Warriors Family Support. September 7th from 10-5:30. Get your tickets here: https://partyatthepenshow.com/.
Family Clay Night: September 11th – 5:00PM – 7:00PM, 6427 W. Ustick Road. Ceramics teach a number of valuable skills, including perseverance, patience, problem solving, and creativity! Find tickets here: https://www.catalystartscollaborative.com/service-page/family-clay-night-ages-8-wed-fri.
Boise Pride!: All Saints joins the other Episcopal parishes to share a booth for Boise Pride this year! Want to help set up, paint nails, or chat with folks on Saturday September 14th or Sunday September 15th, or join in the parade on Sunday at 9? It’s always fun (and you’ll have a chance to go check out the pride festival, too)! If you have questions, ask Mary Ellen Gallagher or you can sign up on the table in the back of the church!
Cyber Security – Medicare: They will not call you, they communicate first via mail.
There is no reason they would need to know your Medicare number, they are Medicare and have it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajCTrXZrxpM. We are coordinating a seminar on scams. Stay tuned!
A BIT OF HISTORY:
THE PLEDGE
The Episcopal definition of a pledge is simple: “A commitment to give one’s time, talents and money as an expression of faith and personal response to God’s generosity.”
Another quote: “A pledge can turn our giving into a spiritual practice just like prayer or worship which in turn helps keep God as a priority in our lives.”
Pledging at All Saints goes back to the beginning. An average yearly pledge in the early days was around $300.00. Today the national average is $3000.00 plus.
For many years the list of contributors was kept secret. The priests and almost all the congregation would never see that information. Today, it is still private, but the leadership are more comfortable using it as they plan for the coming year.
Asking for a pledge today, is less invasive. Over time, with a few reminders, individuals willingly make that decision and send it in. Many years ago after church, my mother, Mildred, and I, on a set date, would sit in the parish hall with many other members. We received a list of names and then went out and personally asked for their pledge. That has changed, I believe, for the better. We trust members to come forth with their pledge without a lot of “arm twisting”.
