DID YOU KNOW?
Pollinator Park
In the upcoming years, we will be creating the area of the lawn on the Latah Street side into a Pollinator Park. By doing this, we hope to turn off the water in that zone, thus reducing the amount of city water we use to irrigate the turf grass.
We plan to again lay down cardboard and bark to kill the grass. The Creation Care Team is choosing which plants to purchase and where they will be placed in the Pollinator Park. These will include ground cover and other plants and shrubs that vary in height from a few inches to a few feet tall. As part of our research, team members (and anyone else who cares to join us) plan to take field trips to both the Idaho Botanical Garden and Golden Eagle Audubon Society’s Pollinator Garden at Warm Springs.
This year we will start a more detailed plan for the final layout of the park. In addition to assisting in mapping out plant locations, the plan will include the approximate locations of paths and benches. Currently, the desire is to use decomposed granite for the pathways. Once installed and compacted, decomposed granite provides a porous surface that is stable enough for use by those who may wish to access the park using wheelchairs or walkers.
The Pollinator Park is being created using the time and talent of parishioners. As a result, it is being constructed in stages as that time and talent becomes available. To that end, the Creation Care Team is always looking for help and advice! Opportunities may range from saving cardboard, scattering bark, raising “starts”, planting new items in the park, etc. Also, from the beginning, the park will be a place where children and young adults can participate and gain a sense of “ownership” at All Saints.
