April 10, 2025 Snapshot

The Anglican Communion Cycle of Prayer: Each Sunday we pray for a different province (regional or national church) of the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is part. The Anglican Communion is made up of churches that share spiritual roots and connectedness with the Church of England. This week we pray for the Church of England. The Church of England is the Anglican Communion’s Mother Church because English missionaries followed English merchants, armies and settlers around the world. Our Book of Common Prayer and episcopal structure are inherited, even as the American Episcopal Church rejected entanglement with Crown and Parliament. The Church of England goes on per tradition: a new Archbishop of Canterbury, who will be selected this year, will be chosen by a process involving the Prime Minister and election by the canons of Canterbury Cathedral after discernment by a Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) and the King’s approval. The CNC resembles American parish search committees but its membership includes the Archbishop of York as well as representatives of the Diocese of Canterbury, other English dioceses, and Anglican provinces around the world. At the end of the process the newly elected Archbishop of Canterbury “pays Homage to His Majesty the King as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.” The Church is still mission-minded, envisioning “a Church of England which fully represents the communities we serve in age and diversity” and hoping to create ten thousand new Christian communities in home, work, education and virtual settings.
