April 17, 2025 Snapshot

The Anglican Communion Cycle of Prayer: Each Sunday we pray for a different province (regional or national church) of the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is part. The Anglican Communion is made up of churches that share spiritual roots and connectedness with the Church of England. This week we pray for the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. Sheng Kung Hui in Chinese language means “Holy Catholic Church.” This branch of the Anglican Communion began as a colonial chaplaincy in 1843, and its name and administration have changed over the years with changes in Hong Kong’s status. At one time the Sheng Kung Hui had dual status in the Diocese of South China and an English Diocese of Victoria. The self-governing province was established in 1998, as Hong Kong passed from British to Chinese possession. Education has been a major emphasis throughout its history; schools established by the church now include more than 30 secondary schools, 60 primary schools, and 30 kindergartens in its three dioceses. Challenges specific to its setting in Hong Kong and Macau include the need for a standing policy on “service arrangements in times of typhoons and rainstorms,” a very dense population on land and in houseboats, conflict with the national government over civil liberties, and rampant materialism in a society that has long been a hub of international business.
